We finally got to go on our trip to the courthouse in Houston, Texas County, MO. It was a beautiful day and drive. The people at the courthouse were very helpful and friendly. They let us go back and look at the indexes for marriages and wills. Problem was they didn't have the wills back in the 1860's in any particular spot and didn't think they had any. They suggested the Historical Society Museum but it is only open on Thursdays and of course the only day we could get there was Friday. All in all it was a nice day and we came home with no new information but eliminated some records for the county when we didn't find anything in the marriages or land records. Here is some info on Texas County, MO in case you have ancestors that were there.
Houston, MO is the county seat of Texas County, MO. It is located off of US Highway 63 east of Springfield MO in the Ozarks. Texas County, MO was formally organized 14 Feb 1845. People started coming to the county though in the 1820's. The records are Marriage including indexes though I found some of the indexes were mixed up. They started around 1855. The Land Records start around 1843 and indexes for these are there too. They have Probate Records but they start around 1870. The best bet they told me for older records and genealogy would be the Historical Society Museum.

This is a good place to start you research in Texas County, MO just be sure it is a Thursday you are going there or, like me, you will be disappointed.
